Board Director: Anita Arietta

Anita Arietta graduated from San Francisco State College (now California State University at San Francisco) with a Bachelor’s Degree in Spanish and French and a year later received her Standard Teaching Credential.

In the early 1970s she taught for five years in the San Leandro Unified School District in the FLES Program (Foreign Language in the Elementary Schools) teaching Spanish and French to 6th and 7th graders. After leaving this position to start a family she returned to teaching, working part-time for a couple of private schools in the Auburn area.

In 1982 she was hired as a French teacher for one semester at Del Oro High School and ended up retiring from there 26 years later having taught Spanish and French. During her tenure there, she served as a Mentor Teacher for the Placer Union High School District, as well as a BTSA (Beginning Teacher Support and Assessment) Mentor. However, the achievement of which she is most proud was her role in changing the teaching methods used at Del Oro as to how language is taught to enable oral proficiency. As a result, she has trained teachers at other schools and has presented break-out sessions at CLTA (California Language Teachers Association) Conferences.

Another achievement was developing an exchange program with a school in France where French students are hosted by American students and then are offered the opportunity to be hosted by their exchange student in France. She continues to work on this program even though she is retired.

This is Anita’s 3rd year as a Sight Word Buster.
